Nurses No Longer Forced To Interact With Dirty Abortion Patients Unless They Are Dying

By Robin Marty

In a victory for those who believe that conscience clauses are utterly limitless, a group of nurses at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey have reached a settlement with the school, stating that they will not be required to assist abortion patients, unless the patient is in a life threatening situation and there is no one else available to help.
Via the Sacramento Bee, “Under the agreement, 12 nurses in the same-day surgery unit of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey can remain in their current positions and not be compelled to assist in any part of an abortion procedure. The nurses must only help in a life-threatening emergency if no other non-objecting staff members are available and only until which time one can be brought in to relieve them, according to the agreement.”
The lawsuit was launched when the nurses complained that they were being forced to “assist” in abortions against their religious convictions, and felt in danger of losing their jobs if they did not.  The University insisted that it never asked the nurses to actually participate in the procedure itself, only to do regular prep and assistance that they would do in any other medical surgery, such as taking patient information, drawing blood or taking a blood pressure reading, or assisting the patient out of the hospital once she was released.
The nurses argued that as an aspect of federal conscience clause that prohibits workers from being forced to do things in their jobs that conflict with their religious beliefs, having any working contact with the abortion patients inherently was the same as actually assisting in terminating a pregnancy.
The American Civil Liberties Union is concerned that the ruling might be used as a license to shun women having abortions, and provide them with a lower standard of care. “No one should ever have to worry about facing discrimination when they check into the hospital,” said Brigitte Amiri, an attorney with the ACLU’s Reproductive Freedom Project. “No woman should have to fear that medical staff will place ideology over duty or deny her care.”
However, according to the ruling, they won’t be denying her care.  At least, not if she’s dying.  Anything else is fair game.
The question comes--whatever happen to the song--' If We Are The Body' by Casting Crowns

It's crowded in worship today
As she slips in trying to fade into the faces
The girl's teasing laughter is carrying farther than they know
Farther than they know

But if we are the body
Why aren't His arms reaching?
Why aren't His hands healing?
Why aren't His words teaching?
And if we are the body
Why aren't His feet going?
Why is His love not showing them there is a way?
There is a way

A traveler is far away from home
He sheds his coat and quietly sinks into the back row
The weight of their judgemental glances
Tells him that his chances are better out on the road

Jesus payed much too high a price
For us to pick and choose who should come
And we are the body of Christ

Jesus is the way

After all, as Christians, our only job is to be the body of Christ. It is the Holy Spirit's job to convict and convert.
