The controversial drilling process known as "fracking" may release harmful gases into the atmosphere which could cause headaches and breathing difficulties, up to half a mile away, research has found.
Hydraulic fracturing or fracking has the potential to generate enormous profits for drilling firms because it releases shale gas, a cheaper alternative to importing expensive fossil fuels from abroad. But it is bitterly opposed by environmental groups which claim the method could contaminate groundwater, pollute the atmosphere and trigger earthquakes.Fracking, which involves injecting water, sand and chemicals into shale beds at high pressure, is already under way in Lancashire and oil firms are examining sites in Sussex, Surrey and Kent. . . .
